Frank Ockenfels 3 is one of today’s most prolific photographers. Over the past 30 years, Ockenfels has photographed some of the most important cultural figures – including David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and former President Barack Obama. His work balances a highly conceptual approach to set design, makeup, and lighting, alongside a masterful ability to capture raw humanity.

In creating a film to promote the opening of his photography retrospective, the vision was to bring his inimitable sensibility to the forefront. Through the use of unique cinematic tools – including microscopic lenses and a submersion tank – we captured an intimate portrait our subject and his work, offering the viewer a fully immersed glimpse into Frank’s mind.
